I have found the absolute best way to feed my dogs is with a raw, natural diet.  When Leilani was a young pup I tried a few of the premium dry foods, but she would sooner go days without eating than to eat kibble.  So I had problems keeping weight on her.  The other problem was that she would get yeasty, itchy ears and toes, and flaky dry skin.  After listening to the success other Bull Terrier owners and breeders were having feeding a raw, natural diet, I decided to give it a try.  Immediately she started enjoying her meals and looking for more.  Quickly her ears and feet cleared up and were clean and pink.  Her coat became shiny and thick.  No bad "dog breath", and her teeth were always clean and shiny.  All commercial dog foods say they will do great things for your dog's health, but think about it, do they deliver?  Have you read the ingredients on that bag of food and do you understand what everything is and why it needs to be there?  Just a couple of points to consider.

The best way to start out when considering switching to a raw, natural diet is to do some reading on the topic.  Dr. Ian Billinghurst has written "Give Your Dog a Bone", which is generally considered to be the indispensable book on BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food).  There are many others, and doing a web search on BARF will come up with hundreds of resources.  You can join internet discussion groups like those on Yahoo Groups for more information and to gain from the experience of others.  Don't be intimidated and think it will be too hard or too expensive to do.  Once you know the basics, putting together a raw diet is extremely easy and usually less expensive than feeding a premium kibble.  And you will save money on vet bills!

Another great way to feed raw is to buy from one of the excellent companies who are making packaged, frozen raw foods for dogs.  Right now I am feeding Nature's Variety frozen raw food and a new grain-free kibble from Innova called EVO.  The dogs are doing great on this combination.
